Gunfire erupted right beneath the Space Needle on a Sunday evening, turning a packed community celebration into a scene of panic. Three people died and four others were wounded when bullets started flying during the final hours of the Bite of Seattle food festival.
Investigators believe the violence stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between two individuals in the middle of a dense crowd. Police moved fast, arresting one suspect at the scene after they surrendered. But as of Monday, the search for a second suspect remains wide open, leaving local authorities working to piece together how a family-friendly gathering turned fatal so quickly.
Chaos at the Seattle Center
The annual Bite of Seattle draws massive crowds—roughly 350,000 attendees over three days of food, music, and local vendors. Around 6 p.m., just as the festival was wrapping up its final evening, the atmosphere shifted instantly.
Witnesses described hearing sharp popping sounds they initially mistook for firecrackers. Realization set in fast when crowds began screaming and bolting for the exits. Vendors abandoned their tents, and families scrambled for cover. Some festival-goers took shelter inside the nearby Seattle Children's Museum while emergency crews flooded the Seattle Center campus.
Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis confirmed that dozens of officers were already providing security on-site when the gunfire started. Some officers actually saw one of the suspects firing. While one gunman gave up immediately, the second slipped away into the fleeing crowd before officers could secure the grounds.
Victims and Medical Response
The human toll of the shooting hit hard. Two victims died at the scene, and a third passed away after being rushed to a hospital. Officials identified the deceased as two men aged 19 and 44, alongside a 56-year-old woman.
Four other people suffered injuries, including a two-year-old boy. Hospital updates later confirmed that the toddler was in stable condition, while the adult victims—two men and a woman—received treatment and were eventually discharged. Investigators have not yet clarified whether any of the victims were targets or simply bystanders caught in the crossfire.
