Enter the Cachena. Native to the rugged borderlands of southern Galicia and northern Portugal, this ancient breed was originally used as a draft animal on small mountain farms. When agricultural machinery replaced draft animals in the mid-20th century, the Cachena population plummeted. By the late 1980s, the breed was nearly extinct, with only a few dozen animals remaining.

Today, local land collectives and farmers are driving a massive comeback, boosting the population of native livestock across Galicia from roughly 1,800 in the late 1990s to over 30,000. Cachenas alone have bounced back from just 400 to around 8,000 head.

Why use Cachena cattle instead of standard commercial beef cows? It comes down to basic biology and behavior.

1. Goat-Like Browsing Habits

Most commercial cattle prefer soft, lush pastures and flat ground. Put a standard 1,200-pound Angus cow on a rocky, brush-covered mountain, and it'll struggle to move or starve trying to find familiar grass.

Cachenas behave more like goats. They chomped through dry, tough, woody plants that other cows completely ignore, including prickly gorse and dense brambles. By munching down this biomass, they prevent flammable fuel from building up.

2. Built for Extreme Terrain

An adult Cachena cow weighs between 550 and 850 pounds—about half the size of typical commercial breeds. Their low center of gravity, light weight, and unusually strong, compact hooves allow them to climb near-vertical granite cliffs and squeeze through dense thickets that would stop human crews in their tracks.

3. Virtual Fencing and GPS Tech

Rather than stringing miles of expensive wire fencing across public forests, modern herds are managed using GPS collars. Land coordinators program "virtual fences" via smartphone apps. If a cow approaches the invisible boundary, its collar emits a warning sound, followed by a light impulse if it keeps going.

This lets land managers direct herds to specific high-risk fire zones—like ridge tops, powerline corridors, or edges near villages—without building permanent structures that disrupt other wildlife.

"The native livestock keeps scrubland at an appropriate height so it does not become dangerous," explains Jose Taboada, coordinator of the Vincios land collective in Galicia. "This area has always burned... the livestock allow us to keep the woodland open, managed, and under control."
