The Bureau of Reclamation announced Thursday that US officials will not release cool water from Glen Canyon Dam this year, protecting hydropower while threatening humpback chub downstream. I get why they did it, but the environmental cost is steep.

The Cold Water Dilemma
The Colorado River basin just suffered its worst snowpack on record. Lake Powell sits around 23% of its total capacity. When water levels drop this drastically, the sun heats the shallow surface water. That warm water then gets sucked through the dam's power generators and sent straight down the Grand Canyon.
Why does this matter? Because invasive smallmouth bass love warm water.
Native fish, specifically the federally threatened humpback chub, thrive in the canyon's historically cooler, isolated ecosystem. Smallmouth bass, however, are aggressive predators. When water temperatures exceed 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius), bass spawn rapidly. Right now, the river below the dam is hitting 69 degrees. The bass are multiplying, and they are eating the chub.
For the past two years, the Bureau of Reclamation used a clever trick called a "cool mix flow." They bypassed the hydroelectric turbines and released water from deep, frigid outlet tubes located 100 feet lower on the dam.
It worked perfectly. The cold water shocked the bass and stopped them from spawning.
Why They Pulled the Plug
If the cool water flows worked, why stop them now? Money and grid stability.
Bypassing the turbines means generating zero electricity from that water. Glen Canyon Dam is a massive power source for Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Nebraska.

- Ratepayers ultimately absorb those massive price spikes.
Wayne G. Pullan, the regional director for the Bureau's Upper Colorado Basin, confirmed in an internal email that hydropower generation concerns forced their hand. Andy Colosimo, representing 155 utility customers who buy this power, praised the decision, citing the massive financial burdens utilities faced if the cold water releases continued.
But conservationists are devastated. Matt Rice from American Rivers didn't hold back, stating they already proved cool mix flows are the single most effective way to stop the bass invasion. He bluntly expressed hope that this decision won't act as a death sentence for the chub.
The Uncomfortable Reality of Climate Choices
We are out of easy answers. You cannot invent water.
When you have 40 million people, vast agricultural empires, and native ecosystems all relying on the exact same dwindling puddle, someone has to lose. This year, the fish lost. The system simply could not handle the financial and energetic blow of bypassing the dam's turbines.
To offset this, the government is scrambling to implement rapid-response fish removal and physical barriers in the river. Honestly, trying to manually pull thousands of invasive bass out of the Grand Canyon sounds like bailing out a sinking ship with a teaspoon.
